How Can I Know God?
The
Bible reveals that God is the Creator of the universe, and is mighty,
awesome, and
powerful! It also portrays Him as a pure and holy God who never makes
mistakes.
But the Bible also reveals that God loves people and wants us to know
Him! Far from
being a distant, nonchalant being who is ‘separate’ from
mankind, God is actively involved in the
world! He wants to interact with people. He doesn’t want to conceal
Himself from us, but
intends that we know Him. In fact, in the Bible, God said through the
prophet Jeremiah:
“And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.”
Jeremiah 29:13 (NKJV)
It’s great to know that God wants to be found! So the question is…
How Can I Know God?
What are the steps we can take to get to know God?
Is it a difficult quest, or is it easy?
Where do I start?
A good place to start is to ask God to reveal Himself to you. Actually ask Him to show you what He is like, that you may know Him.
Then read the Bible. The Bible is God’s revelation to mankind. This is where you will learn what God is like. God doesn’t want us to simply wait for Him to reveal Himself to us, but to seek Him and know Him by reading the Bible. While we can learn about God’s power and creativity by observing creation (eg. A magnificent waterfall or a breathtaking view of the universe), to really know God, we need to turn to the Bible.
The Bible contains information about God, and exciting stories that show how He related to people. If you want to know God, why not start today by reading the Bible? A good place to start is the first book of the Bible - Genesis.
Here are some quotes from the Bible about God:
“God is love”
1 John 4:16
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”
Genesis 1:1
“God is faithful”
1 Corinthians 10:13
“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”
Psalm 19:1
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.”
Revelation 4:8
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”
John 3:16-17
How can I know Jesus? Jesus claimed to be God in human form. He wants to be known. He came and lived among people and showed them that he cared about their everyday problems. He also preached a bold and uncompromising message, and claimed to be the only way to God the Father (John 14:6). To get to know Jesus, a great place to start is to read the gospel of Mark in the New Testament. It’s an exciting and fast-moving account of Jesus’ life.
Then try reading the book of John, which includes many of Jesus’ life-changing teachings. Jesus wants to radically change your life as you ‘connect’ with Him!
Is there anything else I can do?
If you know people who live consistent Christian lives and show that they know God, ask them questions about Him. Those who know God love to tell others about Him!
